Engineered hardwood has multiple layers, giving it a different construction than solid hardwood. A layer of hardwood is situated above several layers of high-quality plywood. The boards tolerate moisture, and therefore, they can be installed in a basement over concrete. Engineered wood strips and planks do not usually need to be nailed to a subfloor. Typically, they fit together in click and lock style so that the floor floats over the subfloor. Like solid wood, this type of flooring can be sanded down and refinished when it begins to look worn.
